“Like with like” or “do like?” Modeling peer effects in the classroom

Objective The authors discuss the role of peer networks in shaping decision to enroll at university. Using panel data from Italy, they apply innovative statistical methods study a sample students as complete high school and decide whether or not attend Methods use simultaneous autoregressive (SAR) models analyze four-wave database Italian students. They explore endogenous, exogenous, correlated effects relation about Results findings suggest that endogenous exert significant influence on probability enrolling after controlling for homophilous preferences range variables. Exogenous do appear this outcome. Sensitivity tests results estimation are robust selection. Conclusions This article contributes an emerging body literature SAR effects, illustrating its considerable potential educational outcomes.
